CAIMS*SCMAI E-news Information = = = = Item 1 = = = = Online Membership Application and Renewals (by Lucy Campbell) We are pleased to announce that we now have an online facility to allow CAIMS membership renewals and new membership applications to be done online through a secure server. We invite you to renew your membership for 2010 through this facility and to encourage potential new members to use it to sign up for membership. There is a link to the online system on the CAIMS main pages www.caims.ca and www.scmai.ca and it can be accessed directly at: www.regonline.ca/CAIMS The first time you sign in, even if you are already a member of CAIMS, you will have to create a profile and password for the online system, which you will use for subsequent sign-ins. Once you finish the registration to join or renew your membership, a link will be sent to you so you can print out an invoice. If you have any questions concerning the functionality of the system, please direct them to the email address given on the first page, with cc to the Chair of the Membership Committee (Lucy Campbell: campbell@math.carleton.ca). We are grateful to MITACS for providing us with this facility and helping us to set it up. Thanks also to Joshua Dobbs of MITACS and our treasurer Paul Muir who have put a lot of work into it in the past few months. = = = = Item 2 = = = = CAIMS*SCMAI 2010 Election: Call for Nominations (by Jianhong Wu) CAIMS*SCMAI will be holding an election next winter (March 2010) for: * Treasurer * Two Members-at-Large on the Board of Directors to fill the positions to be vacated, respectively, by Paul Muir, Dhavide Aruliah and Ian Frigaard. All members of CAIMS/SCMAI are invited to suggest names of candidates for these offices. Nominations should reach the Chair of the Nominations Committee, Jianhong Wu by January 15, 2010. = = = = Item 3 = = = = Tenure Track Position at University of Saskatchewan: Differential Equations and Non-Linear Analysis The Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Saskatchewan invites applications for a tenure-track position in the general areas of Differential Equations and Non-Linear Analysis (code: AP10) at the Assistant Professor level effective July 1, 2010. The Department is seeking an individual who has established accomplishments, outstanding promise of further research productivity in the general areas of Differential Equations and Non-Linear Analysis. The research expertise and interests of the applicant should overlap with the existing research strengths in Applied Mathematics within the Department. Applicants must have a doctoral degree. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence or promise of excellence in teaching and graduate supervision, and will be expected to develop a vigorous, externally-funded research program. For more information on the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and its research activities, see http://math.usask.ca/. The College of Arts and Science offers a dynamic combination of programs in the humanities and fine arts, the social sciences and the natural sciences. There are over 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students in the College and 325 faculty, including 12 Canada Research Chairs. The College emphasizes student and faculty research, interdisciplinary programs, community outreach and international opportunities. The University of Saskatchewan is located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, a city with a diverse and thriving economic base, a vibrant arts community and a full range of leisure opportunities. The University has a reputation for excellence in teaching, research and scholarly activities and offers a full range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs to a student population of about 20,000. The University is one of Canada's leading research-intensive post-secondary academic institutions. Application material must include the candidate's Curriculum Vitae and list of publications. Applicants should also arrange for at least three letters of reference to be sent directly from their referees. At least one letter of reference should include detailed comments on the teaching abilities of the applicant. Candidates are also encouraged to supply a research statement and a teaching statement. Candidates must include a cover letter specifying that they are applying for position code AP10 and must indicate if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents. All material should be sent preferably by email as PDF files to: mathstat_search_AP10@math.usask.ca or, alternatively, to: Dr. Raj Srinivasan, Head Department of Mathematics and Statistics University of Saskatchewan 106 Wiggins Road Saskatoon, SK S7N 5E6 Closing date for receipt of applications is January 31, 2010. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. In accordance with the University's Employment Equity Policy, the department welcomes applications from all qualified candidates. The first half of the course will introduce deterministic models of infectious diseases, then proceed to network models. Some case studies of particular diseases, e.g. influenza, will be included. The second half of the course will introduce the basic mechanisms underlying neuronal dynamics and how these lead to various neuronal network models. Applications of such models in particular settings, such as working memory, central pattern generation (e.g. for respiration), hallucinations, and Parkinson's disease, will be presented. For each part of the course, students will work on group projects and use mathematical software, e.g. Maple, Matlab. The required biology will be taught in parallel with the mathematics and modeling.
