First of all, this past year saw a number of changes in the CAIMS Board membership. Most significant were the completion of Bill Langford's two year term as President and Rod Edwards' terms as Secretary. Bill has done a remarkable job as President, bringing CAIMS activities to a whole new level. Some of Bill's more significant activities have been serving as CAIMS liaison with NSERC and working with SIAM to develop a membership reciprocity agreement. Rod, with tremendous energy and constant professionalism, has helped to make CAIMS a more successful and visible organization. We should be particularly indebted to these two individuals for what they have accomplished. Ken Jackson completed his term as Past President of CAIMS. Ken's contributions to CAIMS over the last six years have been exceptional, and we are fortunate that he is continuing to serve CAIMS as a representative for ICIAM 2011. Two other Board members, Leah Keshet and John Stockie, completed their terms. Leah, as Chair of the Membership Committee, made great strides this past year in increasing CAIMS membership and introducing strategies which will increase it further. While we shall miss John's enthusiasm and efforts on the Board, we are fortunate that he is continuing in the role of our MITACS representative. The rest of the Board members will remain. I am particularly grateful that Paul Muir has agreed to stay on as our Treasurer. His conscientiousness and competence will assure that the financial aspects of CAIMS are handled well and that there is continuity in the Board's activities. I am delighted that Jacques Belair is CAIMS President-Elect and will take over as President when my term is completed in 2009. Abba Gumel is our new CAIMS Secretary, and the other new Board members are Dhavide Aruliah and Ian Frigaard. Abba has taken on the job with great vigour and, with the aid of Rod, is ensuring that the transition is a smooth one. Dhavide has graciously offered to work with Abba in the production of our newsletters, this first being the product of their collaboration. Ian has agreed to be the new Membership Committee Chair and has from the outset shown tremendous creativity with new initiatives which will be reported on at a later date. Please visit the CAIMS webpage to keep updated on the CAIMS activities and the individuals who are working in various capacities to make CAIMS better serve its members. CAIMS, being a grass roots organization with no paid staff, is dependent upon motivated individuals who are willing to organize and promote activities. The Board is a good mix of young and more senior researchers, and I believe that you will find them all very open to your suggestions on how CAIMS can be imporved. It is trite but true to say that CAIMS success is intertwined with the support provided by its individual members. The health of CAIMS is perhaps best demonstrated by the tremendous success of the CAIMS 2007 meeting in Banff, which is discussed in this newsletter. Many foreign attendees at the meeting commented to me about how impressed they were with the vitality and enthusiasm of our members in the many minisymposia. I would personally like to thank Jack Macki, Michael Li, and Peter Lancaster for the trememdous effort they put in to make it so successful and to the Applied Mathematics Institute at the University of Alberta for its steadfast support. The next CAIMS will be in Montreal in the first week of June, 2008. It will be a joint meeting with MITACS, the CMS, and the French mathematical organizations. Bill Langford and Victor LeBlanc are on the Organizing Committee. My hope is that there will be a number of CAIMS minisymposia in which you will be interested in participating, ensuring that that we carry the impetus gained from the Banff meeting forward into the next year. There are several issues which I intend to emphasize while President of CAIMS. These include the following: (1) The ongoing effort to ensure that CAIMS is the leading professional society representing Canadian applied and industrial mathematics, and is seen to be so through its activities which strengthen and promote our discipline nationally and internationally. (2) The development of strategies leading to an increase in our membership among university faculty members, postdoctoral fellows and students, and among researchers from industry and governmental institutions. I ask each of you to join us in this effort by encouraging your colleagues to become members. (3) Activities which increase participation from our rank and file members. Providing opportunities for them to participate in contributed minisymposia at our meetings is one obvious way. In addition, there are still applied mathematicians in Canada who work in relative isolation, and more effort is needed to draw them into CAIMS activities from which they will benefit by mentoring from and collaboration with their applied colleagues. (4) Outreach activities which broaden the areas of applied and industrial mathematics represented by CAIMS. For example, while CAIMS membership includes many strong researchers who work in optimization, not enough has been done to attract more applied researchers in discrete optimization, and in discrete mathematics in general. (5) Continue to build links with other national and international organizations. The necessity for CAIMS to often pursue its own independent path in the promotion of Canadian applied and industrial mathematics is recognized. Nevertheless, initiatives such as the collaborative meeting in 2008 and the ICIAM (International Congress for Industrial and Applied Mathematics) in Vancouver in 2011, which was the result of a joint bid to the ICIAM Board by CAIMS, MITACS and SIAM, are instrumental in increasing our prestige and influence. (6) Develop more effective fundraising activities to enhance our prizes and activities. The CAIMS Research Prize has been successful in acknowledging established senior researchers, a corresponding prize for junior researchers is needed. I ask that those of you willing to contribute towards any of these goals to contact Board members and provide your input. Sincerely yours, Bob Russell, CAIMS President August 24, 2007 = = = = Item 2 = = = = Report on CAIMS-SCMAI 2007 by Jack Macki The 2007 Annual Meeting of the CAIMS/SCMAI took place at the Banff Centre, Alberta, from May 20 to 24. The organizers, Peter Lancaster (U of Calgary), Michael Li (U of Alberta) and Jack Macki (U of Alberta), succeeded in bringing together a rich, packed, program with plenary speakers and minisymposia on a great variety of hot topics in applied mathematics. They included subjects from math biology, computational math, applied linear algebra, cryptography, geophysics, math of finance, dynamical systems and fluid dynamics. Beginning with eight selected topics, the program was further enriched by the organizers of eleven \emph{contributed} minisymposia. There were also sessions for contributed papers, poster displays and presentations by the society's prize winners. The plenary speakers with titles of their talks were: John Bush, MIT, USA. ``Surface tension and biology''. Shui-Nee Chow, Georgia Tech., USA. ``Mathematical issues related to a nonlinear circuit''. The program included the society's AGM (conveniently organized during lunch), and a banquet - combined with awards of the following prizes: Research Prize: Gordon Swaters (U of Alberta) Doctoral Dissertation Award: Richard Pancer (U of Toronto) Distinguished Service Award: Jack Macki (U of Alberta) Student Travel Award: Malcolm Roberts (U of Alberta) An afternoon was set aside for enjoyment of the location in the Rocky Mountains. The options included an excursion to the top of Sulphur Mountain on the Banff Gondola, hiking, and trips to Lake Louise. Banff lived up to its impressive reputation for sheer beauty, and excitement was added with a spring snow-shower. The Banff Centre provided spacious facilities which suited the needs of the society admirably. Most participants also enjoyed what have become the customary excellent food-services and accomodations. (Fully justifying the rather complex registration procedures.) The society gratefully acknowledges financial support from MITACS, Pearson Education, the Canadian Applied Math Quarterly, and the institutes : PIMS, CRM and Fields. = = = = Item 3 = = = = CAIMS-SIAM Reciprocity Agreement (by William F. Langford) The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society / Société Canadienne de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (CAIMS) agree to enter into a reciprocal membership agreement, whereby individual members in one society are eligible for a discounted membership in the other. Under this agreement: 1. Any regular member in good standing of CAIMS whose primary place of employment is outside the U.S. will be accepted as a SIAM reciprocity member upon receipt of the SIAM application form and dues payment. Any regular member in good standing of SIAM whose primary place of employment is outside of Canada will be accepted as a reciprocity member of CAIMS upon receipt of the CAIMS application form and dues payment. 2. The special dues rate for CAIMS members joining SIAM under the reciprocal agreement will be 80% of the current annual rate for regular members of SIAM. The special dues rate for SIAM members joining CAIMS under the reciprocal agreement will be 70% of the current annual rate for regular members of CAIMS. 3. Reciprocity members receive all regular member services and benefits. 4. Each society shall help promote reciprocity membership. Societies may exchange mailing labels or provide a brief notice in paper or electronic mail to members. Each society should announce the availability of the reciprocal membership in their flagship publication(s), news online, web site or other appropriate media. Each society should provide to the other a name of a contact person within their society responsible for promoting memberships. 5. This agreement is in effect until terminated by one of the societies. Langford, Past President, CAIMS = = = = Item 4 = = = = CAIMS Travel Bursary Award The winner of the CAIMS Travel Bursary Award to attend ICIAM 2007, given by the Cecil Graham DDA Committee, is Mr. Malcolm Roberts of the University of Alberta. The award, given to support a student to travel to ICIAM 2007 (July 16-20, 2007, Zurich, Switzerland), is valued at $1,000. Mr. Roberts was expected to present either a poster or a paper at the meeting. = = = = Item 5 = = = = ICIAM Report by Ken Jackson (University of Toronto) Some of you may have recently returned from the very successful ICIAM 2007 Meeting in Zurich. There were over 3,000 participants, including a large contingent from Canada. Notable amongst the speakers were Michel Fortin (Université de Laval) and Barbara Keyfitz (Fields Institute) who gave invited talks on "Contact Problems in Solid Mechanics" and "Hyperbolic Conservation Laws: Past and Future", respectively; Ivar Ekeland (PIMS) who gave the Public Lecture on "The Best of All Possible Worlds: the Idea of Optimization"; and Pauline van den Driessche (University of Victoria) who gave the Olga Taussky Todd Lecture on "Matrices in Action for Epidemic Models". In addition, there were many minisymposium presentations and contributed talks by CAIMS members. Our plans for ICIAM 2011 are proceeding well. As you may recall, the Congress is jointly organized by CAIMS, MITACS and SIAM and will be held in Vancouver, 18-22 July 2011. The Steering Committee, consisting of - Arvind Gupta, Congress Director - Ken Jackson and Jim Crowley, Congress Deputy Directors - Ivar Ekeland and Jerry Marsden, Scientific Co-Chairs - Rachel Kuske, Bill Langford and Bob Russell (CAIMS) - Barbara Keyfitz and Francois Lalonde (Canadian Math Inst.) - John Stockie (MITACS) - Marty Golubitsky and Randy LeVeque (SIAM) has been active this past year. One of its main tasks was to choose a Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) consisting of - John Ball, Oxford - Rafael Correa, Chile - Weinan E, Princeton and Peking University - Ivar Ekeland, Congress Scientific Co-Chair - Martin Grötschel, Berlin - Arvind Gupta, Congress Director - Jerrold Marsden, Congress Scientific Co-Chair - William Pulleyblank, IBM - Ian Sloan, ICIAM - Margaret Wright, Courant The SAC's main task is to nominate the Scientific Program Committee (SPC), the members of which should be announced soon. The SAC will then cease to exist and the SPC will begin the very important task of choosing the themes of the meeting, selecting the invited speakers and organizing some invited minisymposia. The Steering Committee has also struck several other committees, including - the Finance Committee (CAIMS rep: Paul Muir) - the Fund-Raising Committee (CAIMS rep: Sam Shen) - the Publications and Promotions Committee (CAIMS reps: Rob Corless, Ken Jackson) The organization for the meeting is progressing on schedule as outlined in our bid document. The Institute is now calling for nominations and applications for the position of Director. The Fields Institute for Research in the Mathematical Sciences, founded in 1992, carries on specialized year-long programs, seminars, workshops, short courses and a broad spectrum of activities across the mathematical sciences. Through these activities it brings together experts, young mathematicians and graduate students to work on issues of current research interest. It is housed in a dedicated building on the campus of the University of Toronto, and has office space for its staff of 15 and up to 75 visitors. It is funded by the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (Canada) and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (Ontario), and is supported by seven sponsoring universities (Carleton, McMaster, Ottawa, Toronto, Waterloo, Western, and York), as well as several affiliateduniversities and corporate sponsors. The Director is the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute with responsibility for the Institute's scientific leadership and overall operations and budget. The term of office is three to five years, renewable once. Candidates should be researchers with strong international stature in the mathematical sciences, and should have proven administrative experience. Full projects are expected to have multi-year duration with an annual budget of $50K to $200K. Seed projects in this competition are expected to have a 24 month duration, show potential to grow into full projects, and have an annual budget of $20K to $50K. All projects must obtain non-NCE partner funds before MITACS funds are released. MITACS is primarily interested in projects within its current theme areas. However the overall merit of the project carries the highest priority and projects in potentially new application areas are also encouraged. BCCA is a multi-disciplinary diagnostic, treatment and research organization dedicated to cancer care of the highest quality. The successful candidate will join a team of 6 Medical physicists. The team supports 4 linear accelerators, 8 screening mammography sites, CT and conventional simulation, LDR Brachytherapy, and orthovoltage x-rays. This project will investigate and implement computerized methods for analyzing breast density in digital mammograms. The methods will provide not only efficient means to measure breast density, but also reproducible estimates that will reduce errors of mammographic density measurements. Successful candidate will also have opportunity to participate in other clinical research activities at the cancer centre. The ideal candidate has (i) a PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics or a related field, (ii) has strong programming skills, and (iii) will start in September 2007. The project brings together a team of researchers from the BC cancer agency, Screening Mammography Program of BC and the University of British Columbia. The initial appointment is for one year. Depending on the successful candidate’s inclination and progress, opportunities for an additional temporary teaching appointment at the University, for practical medical physics experience at the BC Cancer Agency, or for a one-year extension will be explored. However, models in physical and biological applications are increasingly encompassing features which do not fit this theory, often having non-constant and state-dependent delays. Mixed type differential equations with both advanced and retarded arguments also arise, for example as the defining equations for travelling waves in nonlinear lattices. Volterra functional (integral and integro-differential) equations with variable and state-dependent delays, including equations of ?integral-algebraic? type, are also used with increasing frequency. The theory of such problems is still not complete, though significant progress has been made in recent years. Large gaps also exist in the numerical analysis and computational solution of such functional equations. This workshop will provide a wide perspective on current research and open problems, including theory, applications and numerical analysis of these equations. Recent advances across the field of DDEs will be covered, with particular concentrations in non-constant and state-dependent delay equations, advance-delay differential equations and Volterra functional equations, including problems with differential-algebraic structure. This field forms an ever-expanding part of the financial sector, in numerous ways today. Use of high performance computers for research in computational finance has grown steadily in the last decade and the time is ripe to collect these researchers to exchange their ideas, models and results through a conference meeting. This workshop will be a first such effort in bringing together researchers in the area of computational finance (i) who design and develop parallel and distributed algorithms (ii) at a venue where Parallel, Distributed, Grid, and High Performance Computing are the fundamental threads of discussions and arguments.
